These Children Need Your Help for Food in 2020

The situation remains dire for 2,113 children in Aweil where we have been feeding vulnerable children for more than four years now. A GO! team deployed to these sites in June 2019 with our partner Bishop Garang Awac of Christ Mission to the World, and there is concern for the short-term viability for these children without our continued support. Your gift will provide 20 meals for each child each month, and the number of children impacted will grow with the level of the support provided. You may want to consider making your support a monthly gift that will keep these children nourished and attending school!

As we move forward we will be funding this effort with specific donor partners as we no longer have the resources that will allow us to cover these costs without funding specific to this initiative. To date we have invested $208,309 since 2016 to provide an estimated 646,140 meals. Only 60% of the total invested in South Sudan since February 2016; $124,869, was covered by funds specifically earmarked for this initiative. Moving forward, as of November 2020, $16,215 is still needed to finish out the year.

AWEIL COMMUNITY ORPHANS FEEDING PROGRAMME (ACOFP) involves a school feeding operation in three villages namely Adoor Village (Aweil East), Beliek Village (Aweil Central), and Lueth-Wek Village (Aweil East), and in turn increases access to education and improves nutrition for 2,113 vulnerable children (November 2020). Primary education net enrollment rate in Northern Bhar el Ghazal State is very low and the number of children completing primary education is low because of high dropout rates and minimal progression rates. Malnutrition is common amongst children and low attendance at school is predominantly attributed to sickness or hunger. Our program meets the development needs of Aweil Central County and Aweil East County both in Northern Bhar el Ghazal State by contributing to the goal of universal primary education targeting children living in areas of poverty and food insecurity by removing barriers to education such as hunger.

Since starting this program with 300 orphaned children in February 2016 we have fed children five days a week, and also have encouraged many more to attend school in the process. We provided for approximately 174,200 meals for vulnerable children in 2019, and we will serve a projected 337,76 meals in 2020. Any surplus raised will go to deliver meals beyond this time period, increase the number of children served, or to increase the number of meals provided each day.
